Dylan Thomas Community School is set to become the latest comprehensive in Swansea to benefit from an all-weather pitch.
Swansea Council’s cabinet is being asked to approve plans for the £200,000 sports facility that will also be available for community use.
It will replace the school’s existing hard standing sports area.
Several community sports clubs have already expressed an interest in using the new pitch when it opens.
The project, which also includes a multi-use games area, will be funded by the school and council along with grants from the Garfield Weston Foundation and the Johann Cruyff Foundation.
In a report going to the cabinet meeting next Thursday (Nov 19) headteacher Paul Davies said it would make a huge difference to pupils and the wider community.
He said: “It is important that Dylan Thomas School provides the best facilities it can for its pupils and that the quality of provision does not fall behind that of other schools. All children deserve the best standard of education possible and this project will help us do so.
“Having an all-weather pitch will mean our young people can enjoy spots activities all year round and the curriculum offer the school can provide will be far greater as will the level of community use.
“This project will leave a long-lasting legacy for many years to come for our pupils and the wider community.”
Earlier this month Swansea Council announced funding for an all-weather pitch at Pontarddulais Comprehensive School.
Morriston, Pentrehafod and Penyrheol have seen new pitches within the last three years and all-weather skills and training pitches are being added at Ysgol Gyfun Gwyr as part of the £6.7m redevelopment of the school.
Swansea Council is also working with Cefn Hengoed and Olchfa on plans for all-weather facilities at those schools along with one on land next to YG Bryntawe.
Cllr Jennifer Raynor, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Education Improvement, Learning and Skills said: “Mr Davies and the staff at Dylan Thomas School have done a fantastic job in developing this project that will be of enormous benefit to pupils at the school and to community sports clubs in Townhill, Cockett and surrounding wards.
“There is record levels of investment being spent in Swansea on improving education facilities and this includes sports facilities which are so important to many of our young people.”
