World of Warcraft is the most popular MMORPG game, but if you are looking for something more challenging there are plenty of them that you can try out and play yourself. This list has been voted by other PC gamers so rest assured that these games at the top are some of your best options.
The Elder Scrolls Online
It’s hard to miss the world-building of Elder Scrolls Online. It features a cast full of characters with compelling backstories and dialogue, but ESO also offers an immersive experience that seamlessly ties into its lore. With environments ranging from swamps in Morrowind to sunbathed isles on Summerset, there are plenty of places for you to explore no matter what your preferences may be!
RuneScape
Runescape is an old game that was released back in 2001. Despite this, it has managed to remain popular all these years with at least 50,000 players playing the game on any given day and performing tasks such as fishing, farming, smithing, and battling enemies like trolls or dragons to earn items, experience, or OSRS gold. The PVP area of Runescape known as wilderness really tests a player’s skills when competing against other players.
Old School Runescape is a fan favorite amongst the veteran players of this game because they appreciate its simplicity. Though graphically, Old School isn’t much to look at, its gameplay has made up for that with ease; and what many consider as fun. In 2013 however, Jagex released an updated version known only as Runescape 3. Despite being newer than their original release in 2001 though (and having more graphics), these new features have not been well received by most fans like myself who still prefer the old-school style.
Ever Online
Eve Online is the king of sandbox MMOs. It’s a game that places you in a vast cosmos, filled with starships, pirates, and player-created corporations. Eve Online can be more challenging than other games because it forces players to interact constantly with existing users who are often cutthroat themselves if they want to survive.
Final Fantasy XIV Online
Final Fantasy XIV is a refreshing MMO in the market that offers an alternative to World of Warcraft. The MMORPG has been making strides over the years by implementing new features while sticking true to its roots, giving players their best Final Fantasy experience yet with beautiful graphics and fantastic storylines.
Star Wars: The Old Republic
BioWare is known for two things: Star Wars: The Old Republic and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. The latter, an RPG from 2003 that acted as BioWare’s breakthrough title in mainstream gaming culture, spawned a sequel titled Star Wars: The Old Republic which takes all your favorite aspects of single-player RPGs like story-driven content with companions but harkens back to MMOs by including party interactions through dungeons and raids.
Warframe
Warframe is a free-to-play MMO that has grown into an expansive universe in the years since its release. Originally, Warframe was based around missions and persistent online play but now features open-world environments like Destiny where you can skim across planets on hoverboards or soar through space with Railjack starships. It may require more of your time or money to level up or get the best warframes, though because there are 50 million players worldwide who enjoy playing it – so if you’re dedicated enough then do not worry!
