After being delayed a year by the pandemic, fans can finally get stuck into Euro 2020. It’s arrived in all its glory. Fans haven’t been more excited for a major tournament for a very long time: top-quality talent, fans back in stadiums, and one of the most competitive competitions in recent memories.
One aspect of the European Championships that tends to still have plenty of debate is the race for the golden boot. Whether it’s your country’s number 9 or the player you feel is underrated, everyone seems to have a different take. There’s never any definite indication of who will win it. After all it becomes circumstantial. How far will that player’s team progress? How tough is the group they are in? It’s so unpredictable that it usually presents good betting opportunities. If you really know your stuff, you could make some great sports bets ahead of Euro 2020. If you’re still undecided who will hit the back of the net most frequently, here are some of the favourites to get their hand on the golden boot.
Romelu Lukaku
The Belgian target man is already worthy of discussion when it comes to top goal scorers. In the Red Devil’s golden generation, he has been the man leading the line. Going into this competition, his goalscoring record has never been better. He’s netted 28 times for Inter Milan this season, and looks to bring this form onto the international stage.
Harry Kane
The Spurs front man is likely to feel the pressure going into Euro 2020. With the England national team as hopeful as ever, he’ll be looking to captain the squad to their first ever European Championship title. Considered one of the most prolific goal-scorers in the world, England’s success will rely heavily on his form.
Kylian Mbappe
The French wonderboy had a breakthrough at the 2018 World Cup. He proved that he certainly wasn’t overrated in his teenage years. Still just 22, Kylian Mbappe is one of the most valuable talents in the world. As the world champions look to avenge their final loss in 2016, his goalscoring talents will be highly necessary.
Cristiano Ronaldo
After captaining his Portugal side to victory in 2016, Cristiano Ronaldo will look to repeat the success five years later. The 36-year-old managed three goals in the last competition, but will look to improve on that this summer. In Serie A, Ronaldo managed to find the back of the net 29 times in 33 games.
Memphis Depay
The Netherlands have been blessed with wonderful forward talent over the years. Robin Van Persie, Arjen Robben, and Dennis Bergkamp are just some of the recent ones. Depay is now Holland’s leading man. He scored 20 goals for Lyon in Ligue 1 this year, which sees him in good form ahead of the summer’s tournament.
Karim Benzema
France will really benefit from the addition of Karim Benzema in the squad. After a falling out with the French national team, it’s been a number of years since he represented his country. He had an extremely fine season at Real Madrid and could make the difference in taking France a step further than last time out.
