A major demolition scheme to help improve air quality levels at Hafodyrynys Hill has started this week (Thursday 14th October).
Over 20 properties will be demolished along this key strategic route to tackle pollution problems at the site.
Last year, residents were offered a generous financial settlement for the purchase of their homes to allow the scheme to progress and contractors started the 14 week demolition works today.
Cllr Philippa Marsden, Leader of Caerphilly CBC was on site to see the scheme commence, “The council, along with the whole community, welcomes the start of these demolition works, which will finally address the long-standing air quality problems at this site.
“We have had to follow a long and complex process to get here, but throughout this we have always put the put the interests of the residents of Hafodyrynys first.”
“We explored a number of options, but demolition of these properties will allow us to achieve air quality compliance in the shortest possible timeframe.”
The works will reduce the high levels of pollution and have a positive impact on the health and well-being of the remaining residents, the wider community and those travelling through the area.
Cllr Marsden added, “I would like to thank the community for their patience, co-operation and feedback throughout the process in helping us reach this conclusion. I would like to also thank Welsh Government for their support to in helping us arrive at this positive conclusion for Hafodyrynys.”
The contractor for the demolition works is Walters UK Ltd.
