Plans for a Tiny Forest in Caerphilly’s Morgan Jones Park are progressing as plans to plant 600 trees are set.
Climate Action Caerffili Gweithredu Hinsawdd (CACGH) are to hold an event, which will take place on Global Day of Action (6th November) and will not only see the planting of 600 trees, but will include open to all, fun-packed activities for the whole family.
The event will mark the beginning of Caerphilly’s Tiny Forest, a very small forest created using a method developed by a Japanese botanist, Akira Myawaki which is designed to grow 10 times faster than a conventional forest and provides a whole host of benefits to help combat climate change and biodiversity loss.
During the event, taking place in Morgan Jones Park, attendees will get the chance to plant their own tree and take part in other activities. Local artist Kate Raggett of Arty Parky will also be attending and creating a piece of land art made from natural materials found in the Park.
CACGH are keen to ensure that there is an educational focus and the Tiny Forest will include a classroom area which will be able to be used by schools and the community. Providing local children with the opportunity to get ‘stuck in’ with tree planting, an activity they wouldn’t normally do at school, aims to inspire a connection to nature in young people.
CACGH also hope to get members of the community involved in the project, especially at this key stage, so that people feel connected to the space and are excited about being able to use it in the future so are encouraging members of the community, residents and families to come and help plant trees.
Local councillor Jamie Pritchard said “We are all very excited for work to start on Caerphilly’s Tiny Forest. This is an exciting project that will improve biodiversity and provide a number of benefits to protect our local environment. It’s a pleasure to be part of something which will have a positive impact in the community.”
Group volunteer Terry Gordon says: “The Tiny Forest project has already inspired a lot of local community interest and a number of local businesses have made generous donations to the project”.
This free event follows funding by Welsh Government’s Landfill Disposals Tax Communities Scheme, administered by WCVA and will take place at Caerphilly’s Morgan Jones Park on the 6th of November, 11am to 3pm.
