The Nikwax Caerphilly Challenge Series is set to return on Saturday May 7th 2022 – with its 10th Caerphilly Challenge Series, The Twmbarlwm Trek.
The Twmbarlwm Trek however, is much older than 10 years, with the first Trek taking place 38 years ago in 1984. Organised by Islwyn County Borough council.
Norman Liversuch one of the 1984 organisers, and now one of the Challenge Series volunteers, was asked how the Trek has changed since 1984. Norman told us: “The routes and countryside haven’t changed. The views from all the high points are still as spectacular as in 1984.
“Technology has changed things for the better. In 1984 our checkpoints were manned by the territorial army, who used the trek as a communications exercise. Our walkers were kept safe, but it took a lot of manpower. These days, we still have checkpoints, but only need one volunteer with a ‘Fabian 4’ scanner and mobile phone. Each entrant has ‘Racetek’ wrist bands which allows us track them as they move around the route.”
Norman feels the biggest difference however, between 1984 and now is that: “The Challenge Series has grown in size, takes place in different parts of the County and has become more inclusive.
“In 1984 we had one long-distance walk with 126 hardened long-distance walkers taking part. We now have 4 routes available ranging from 1-5 miles to 20 miles, which means more people can take part.
“Last year we had more than 500 entrants taking part in a challenge walk suitable for their personal ability and fitness level. More people see the value of the countryside and aren’t afraid to explore and take part.”
Routes are still being planned however there will be routes to suit all fitness levels and abilities. Walks usually range from 1-5 miles to 20-22 miles making the challenge available for people of all ages and abilities.
The challenge is being planned with COVID-19 in mind to ensure a COVID safe environment throughout.
General release tickets are available until 27th April for £12. For under 18’s a £2 reduction is applied to their tickets with the minimum age of 12 for any challenge over 5 miles.
There is no deadline for the 1-5 mile route which costs just £2 and can be paid on the day. There is no minimum age, and all proceeds go to the mayors’ charities Action for Children and Liver4Life.
