Nazir Ahmed, from Albany Road, Cardiff was ordered to pay just over £1,500 at Cardiff Magistrates’ Court last Wednesday (February 15th) for fly tipping waste in East Bay Close in Butetown.
On January 19th last year, a waste enforcement officer visited East Bay Close, following reports that five black bags, two suitcases and general waste had been dumped on waste land.
Following further inspection, delivery notes, personal letters and even an address tag on one of the suitcases clearly identified that all the waste belonged to Mr Ahmed.
A letter was sent to Mr Ahmed’s address to invite him to an interview under caution so he could explain how his household waste ended up being fly tipped in a ward that he doesn’t live in. No response was received on two occasions and the £400 Fixed Penalty Notice remained unpaid, so the case was filed for court action.
A spokesperson for Cardiff Council, said: “Fly tipping is completely unnecessary, as the council provides the facilities for people to dispose of their waste, including kerbside waste collections and the use of recycling centres for the disposal of larger items.
“All of the items that were dumped by Mr Ahmed could have been disposed of for free using these facilities, but as the waste was fly tipped, he now must pay a significant sum of money for the disposal of his waste. This should send a clear message to those who fly tip waste in Cardiff, as it isn’t acceptable and when necessary, we will prosecute these matters through the courts.”
Nazir Ahmed was fined £1,100, ordered to pay £440 in costs and a Victim Surcharge of £110.
