St John Cymru is launching its ‘Save a Life September’ campaign this month, which aims to train an extra 5,000 potential lifesavers.

Each September, the nation’s leading first aid charity offers free 2-hour training sessions across Wales teaching people simple techniques which could one day help to save someone’s life.

Sessions give people the knowledge and confidence to deal with an emergency situation and cover the following scenarios:

how to manage an incident
how to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
treating an unresponsive casualty
what to do if someone is choking
how to treat severe bleeding

Chief executive for St John Cymru, Julia Hobbs, said:

“As Wales’ leading first aid charity we believe no one should die because they needed first aid and didn’t receive it.

“Every year thousands of people die in situations where first aid could have given them a chance to live. St John Cymru teaches people essential first aid skills so they can be the difference between a life lost and a life saved.

“We believe first aid should be available for everyone whenever and wherever they need it,” she added.

Just one in five people know what to do in an emergency and over two thirds of people in Wales lack the confidence to help someone experiencing a cardiac arrest.

St John Cymru is appealing to the Welsh public to help change these statistics and join them by becoming a potential lifesaver at one of its local first aid awareness sessions this September.
