Popham Kidney Support, a Swansea-based kidney charity recently received over £5,000 in fundraising on the back of a sponsored walk which spanned the distance of the Pembrokeshire Coastline.
Sarah Greenwood completed the 186-mile walk in several stages, beginning in October 2022 and completing the challenge in Tenby on April 8, 2023.
Greenwood donated her sponsorship funds to the charity, which aids kidney patients and their families with emotional, financial and informational support, contributing to its fundraising efforts for the Children’s Kidney Centre at Cardiff & Vale University Hospital. Popham Kidney Support is looking to raise £130,000 towards the refurbishment.
Her connection to the charity stems from her son’s treatment at the Children’s Kidney Centre and she has seen first-hand the need for refurbishment, which will concentrate on developing a friendly, warm and accommodating environment for the children undergoing dialysis and related treatments.
The successful fundraising campaign was a testament to Sarah’s strong support network, comprised of her dedicated family and friends. They not only participated in the walk alongside her but also went above and beyond to raise funds for the charity. Sarah’s mother was particularly instrumental in spreading the word about the challenge, visiting multiple towns and tirelessly sharing information about the cause to garner more support.
The Pembrokeshire Coast Path runs along the coastline of Pembrokeshire in South West Wales, from Amroth in the south to St Dogmaels in the north. It is a National Trail and is considered one of the most scenic long-distance walks in the UK with stunning views of the Irish Sea.
The path was opened in 1970 and has since become a popular destination for hikers and nature lovers. It takes walkers through a variety of landscapes, including rugged cliffs, sandy beaches, and sheltered coves, as well as through charming coastal villages and towns.
Joanne Popham, Popham Kidney Support CEO, said:
“We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude for Sarah’s donation of £5,000 following her sponsored walk. Your donation truly makes a difference and will help us provide essential services to our community, and we are deeply grateful for your kindness, generosity and incredible commitment to undertake this challenge.”
