Cardiff Met’s School of Art and Design opens doors to public for free creative workshops

Cardiff Met's School of Art & Design Summer Show

Cardiff residents are being given the chance to show off their creative flair and develop new artistic skills as Cardiff Metropolitan University’s School of Art and Design opens its doors to the public for its annual Community Day.

On Sunday 11th June 2023, members of the public can have a go at some of the skills taught within Cardiff Met’s School of Art and Design including laser cutting in the digital technology workshop, FabLab; using the potter’s wheel; and learning new stitching techniques with textile experts.

The Community Day is open from 12-4pm, with free workshops running until 3.30pm. Activities are suitable for anyone aged 8+, with free workshops including:

  • Throw a pot on the potter’s wheel – prepare clay, learn to control the speed of the wheel, centre the clay and have a go at throwing.
  • Design and laser-cut a badge – design a badge, learn how a laser cutter works, and use it to produce your own badge.
  • Brilliant phone photography – tips and tricks for taking the best phone photographs from one of the Cardiff Open Art School photography tutors.
  • Collaborative painting workshop – learn about mixing colours to create shapes and patterns on your own small painting that will then become part of a giant artwork.

A talk – ‘Pathways to success in Art and Design’ – will be repeated throughout the day and will give attendees insight into careers in the industry, while tours of the School’s facilities and workshops will run all day.

The Community Day is just one of the events making up the Cardiff School of Art and Design’s Summer Show, a seven-day public exhibition of work by 2023 graduating students from across the School’s 13 undergraduate programmes, including Animation, Fashion Design, Fine Art, Interior Design and more.

Families based in Ely, Caerau or Fairwater can access free transport to and from the Community Day and lunch on behalf of Cardiff Met University, and should contact [email protected] to book a place.

Dr Bethan Gordon, Dean of Cardiff Met’s School of Art and Design, said: “Our Summer Show is a fantastic opportunity for the School and University to give back to the local community by extending our facilities, talents and resources during our Community Day. There isn’t any requirement to have a creative background, this is a chance to get stuck into new skills and techniques using our excellent facilities. The public can also view and celebrate the great work being exhibited by our students across a host of mediums as they embark on their graduate journey and prepare for their professional careers.”
