The Unite Union’s industrial action over nationally-negotiated pay awards has now been extended until October 16th.
Unite began UK-wide strike action on September 4 and this was due to end on September 18th. Now the union has advised that it will extend its strike action until October 16 – albeit with a week’s break between September 18 and September 25.
Due to the extended strike, other Cardiff Council services may now become impacted by industrial action. The council has said it will let residents know as soon as they can what services are affected if this happens.
Some waste streams have already been affected by the strike and the council expects these services to continue to be impacted between now and October 16th. However, they have said they are trying to minimise any impact.
If any of your waste isn’t collected on your scheduled collection day, the council is asking residents to bring their waste back into the confines of their property and to put it out on the next scheduled collection day.
To ensure the council can continue to collect most of your black bins and black bags, food waste, and recycling, new collection arrangements are being prepared in case they are required during the strike.
It is also possible other changes may have to be announced during the industrial action due to further unforeseen disruption.
Because of this, and because the situation could change on a daily basis, we are asking that you please ignore any collection notifications which you have signed up to until strike action ends.
Instead, on the day of your collection, check the collection calendar either on our website here Check my collection dates (cardiff.gov.uk), or via the Cardiff Gov App, or by using Bobi, the council’s chatbot. They will also update our social media channels daily.
The following changes may have to be made to collections.
General Black Bin or Black Bags Waste Collections – Unchanged
Collections for general waste are expected to continue as normal. Please put your black bin or black bags out for collection on your usual scheduled fortnightly collection day.
Food Waste Collections – Unchanged
Food waste collections are expected to continue as normal. Please put your kerbside caddy out for collection on your usual scheduled weekly collection day.
Garden Waste Collections – Cancelled
Garden waste collections are cancelled until the national industrial action ends on October 16th. Garden waste can be brought to either Lamby Way or Bessemer Close Recycling centre by making an appointment here. If you continue gardening during this period, please consider placing your cuttings, etc, into bags to make it easier for you to bring to one of the recycling centres if you choose to do so.
Hygiene Waste Collections – Potential change to collection
The collection of hygiene waste may have to be suspended between September 25th and October 16th. If it is suspended during the strike any hygiene waste, unable to be stored, can be put out alongside your black bin or black bags on your scheduled fortnightly collection day.
Green Bag Recycling Collections Fortnightly – Potential change to collection
Weekly green bag recycling collections will be collected on the same day as your general (black bag) waste.

If you live in one of the areas using sacks and glass caddies, your recycling collections are expected to remain unchanged. Please continue to put out your recycling as normal.
