Volunteers who promote the heritage of a former centre of Swansea industry plan a big weekend for the public.
The Friends of Hafod Morfa Copperworks will be taking part in the Cadw Open Doors scheme on September 23 and 24 – with free public tours.
Swansea Council is supporting the event by opening up the doors of two engine houses it helped save in recent years.
Friends chairman Tom Henderson said: “This weekend is a unique opportunity to get up and close to two rare survivors of Swansea’s once vast copper industry.”
Council cabinet member Robert Francis-Davies said: “Our intention is to bring the engine houses into use in future years – we’ve secured investment to help develop a heritage visitor attraction and cafe.”
The council is leading its regeneration with help from partners and funding from sources such as the UK Government’s Levelling Up programme.
September 23 and 24’s Cadw Open Doors at the copperworks will include one-hour guided tours of the engine house compound and access to the Musgrave and Vivian engine houses.
Normally at present, the only way to access the Musgrave is via a ladder. For this event, however, the friends group has worked with Penderyn Distillery and Rowecord Total Access to put in place scaffolding steps which will allow access.
Booking for tours is essential – www.bit.ly/CODhafod23.
Due to the former industrial nature of the site and the fact that regeneration is in its early stages access will not be available to all. For advice email [email protected]
