Eastern Leisure Centre in Llanrumney has been shortlisted for a prestigious award from trade association UK Active for its crucial role in boosting physical activity levels and improving mobility and reducing pain for people with chronic health conditions.
The Better Cardiff centre – a bustling community hub open seven days per week – has been nominated for ‘Local and Regional Centre of the Year’ in recognition of its huge contribution to the local community.
The centre meets the needs of a diverse range of customers with an innovative programme that includes one of the largest swimming schools in the city, over 30 group fitness classes per week and a variety of gymnastics, football games and athletics.
The centre is proud to work with the NHS on its Escape Pain, Cancer Rehab, and Exercise Referral schemes and helping to reduce NHS waiting lists by providing patients with a pathway into mainstream fitness classes. It has partnerships with the Youth Service, Probation Services and during the school holidays Fit and Fed and Children’s Play Services join forces to offer free activities for under 16s.
The centre is run by charitable social enterprise GLL under the ‘Better’ brand. The organisation’s ethos is to reinvest profits to support local communities and the eight centres across Cardiff are an important part of this commitment.
Nikki Lewis, Better Cardiff Eastern’s General Manager, comments, “We are so pleased to have been shortlisted for Leisure Centre of the Year. This second nomination in a row is a testament to the building itself and the hard work of all our staff, the diversity of our programming and our standing in the community.”
UK Active award winners will be announced at the end of October this year.
