Welshpool-based recycling specialists Parry & Evans Ltd not only have to keep close control over the quality of recycled materials but also export trading prices.

The family company, which has a turnover of £16 million and employs 62 staff, exports up to 40% of recycled cardboard, paper and plastic to America, China, India, Indonesia and across Europe.
Now the company’s success story has been recognised with the International Trade Award, sponsored by Lanyon Bowdler Solicitors, at the annual Powys Business Awards held at The Hafren, Newtown. The awards are organised by Mid Wales Manufacturing Group.

Director Lee Evans said:
“It’s brilliant to win this award and I can’t thank our staff enough for all their hard work. We are now one of the biggest waste management recycling companies in Wales and, hopefully, we will grow even more in the next few years as we diversify.”
Established in 1961, Parry & Evans Ltd has increased export sales by 25% in the past two years, which has increased turnover and profit. The business monitors international trade closely to ensure purchased material is costed against potential sales prices.
Despite the UK recycling industry being hit when China shut its doors and enforced stricter regulations and fines for poor quality products, Parry & Evans has performed well.
In addition to ensuring better quality control by investing in new plant and machinery, the company spread the risk by increasing exports to other countries. The company processes more than 3,000 tonnes of cardboard, paper and plastic weekly and has exciting projects on the horizon to dramatically boost this figure.
In the last 18 months, 10 new jobs have been created and the company has invested in two new balers, a new building and substation, a new fleet of MAN trucks, an overhauled sorting system and two additional optical sorting machines.
As well as focusing on staff training, the company has achieved international accreditations for quality, environment and health and safety, all of which are important to its international trading partners.
“The recycling industry is overly export reliant and Parry & Evans is no different,” said Lee. “We do, however, mitigate any potential losses and spread risks as we see reasonable so that our profit margins remain sustainable.”
Powys Business Awards judges said: “The passion and knowledge shown to us by all the staff we spoke to was impressive and it is clear this business has a long future ahead.
“Exports have grown to 40% of turnover from 15% in the last two years and management’s commitment and ability to access new markets and develop new income streams firmly places them to continue to be a significant player in this vital sector.”
