The new Mayor of Caerphilly County Borough Council has been announced as Julian Simmonds.

Julian, who represents the Crosskeys ward, accepted the position of civic head at the Annual General Meeting of Council last week (Thursday 9th May).

Cllr Simmonds said, “It’s an honour and a privilege to be serving as the county borough’s mayor for the forthcoming year. I’m looking forward to embracing the role and meeting as many residents as possible in civic engagements and across our communities”.

The Deputy Mayor is Cllr Dawn Ingram-Jones, who represents the Bargoed ward.

Council also agreed to appoint a Presiding Member (and Deputy Presiding Member) into the Council structure. Cllr Colin Gordon will act as Presiding Member and Cllr Liz Aldworth as Deputy Presiding Member.

The Presiding Member will be responsible for the administrative functions as the Chair of Council which will include chairing full Council meetings and ensuring Council meetings are conducted in line with the Council’s Constitution.

The addition of Presiding Member will allow the Mayor to act as the ceremonial head of the Council and represent the Council at all civic and ceremonial functions.
