During October and November there will be an opportunity for individuals to dry stone wall on Yr Ysgwrn’s historic farm under the supervision of two experienced local craftsmen.

Dry stone walls are very common in Snowdonia’s highlands and is a craft that dates back centuries. The same basic techniques are used today that were used centuries ago and the craft of choosing and placing the stones is a very special skill.

Snowdonia National Park Authority (“SNPA”), the owner of Yr Ysgwrn since 2012, is keen to encourage countryside traditions and the restoration of habitats.

“Dry stone walls are an inherent part of Snowdonia’s landscape and are traditional field boundaries” Rhys Owen, SNPA’s Head of Conservation, Woodlands and Agriculture said; “They are also an important habitat for farm animals and wildlife offering year round shelter for small animals, insects and reptiles. This is a fantastic opportunity to anyone who has an interest in developing traditional farmingmethods.“

On the 29th of October and 17th of November the SNPA is offering two one day sessions at Yr Ysgwrn to introduce the craft to new audiences. We expect attendees to bring sturdy shoes and appropriate clothing, as well as a packed lunch. Yr Ysgwrn will provide tea/coffee and cake to attendees.

The sessions are free of charge. If you are interested in attending please phone Yr Ysgwrn’s Office on 01766 772508.
