Swansea’s Dylan Thomas Exhibition has earned a spot on the shortlist as best small museum category in the Kids in Museums Awards 2024.
This accolade reflects the exhibition team’s dedication to crafting enriching experiences that resonate with children and families alike.
Managed by Swansea Council, the Love the Words exhibition and engagement programme at the Dylan Thomas Centre serves as a gateway to the world of the poet, one of the UK’s most celebrated literary figures and a proud son of Swansea.
Council head of cultural services Tracey McNulty said the nomination highlighted a commitment to fostering a vibrant and educational environment in which to explore the life and work of Dylan Thomas.
She said: “Thomas’s legacy as a writer whose love for the whimsicality of language and its power to evoke vivid imagery is a source of inspiration we aim to pass on to the younger generation.
“We thank Kids in Museums and the nominating families for acknowledging the efforts of our team at the Dylan Thomas Centre.”
The centre’s interactive exhibits, multimedia elements and a trail designed for children, along with genuine artefacts, offer a comprehensive exploration of Dylan Thomas’s multifaceted legacy, his ties to Swansea, and his global influence. Accompanied by a variety of activities and events, the exhibition aims to offer an enlightening experience for visitors of all ages.
The shortlisting panel at Kids in Museums felt the work of the exhibition’s dedicated team was hugely appreciated by local families. They considered activities at the centre to be inclusive and designed thoughtfully, with the team’s local partnerships leading to a strong response in supporting families during the cost-of-living crisis.
Families nominating the centre for the award were full of praise. Recent comments from visitors further show how the centre is held in high esteem.
Liliwen, aged 10, said: “The Dylan Thomas Exhibition is the best; the staff are friendly, helpful and kind. It’s very family friendly, the craft area is fantastic and it incorporates everything about Dylan Thomas. We love going there.”
