Thousands of runners and supporters enjoyed Admiral Swansea Bay 10k (Sunday September 15).
Crowds started gathering at around 8.30am as runners prepared for the main race. This headed west from the Recreation Ground to Mumbles and then back along the Prom to the finish line on Mumbles Road near the Recreation Ground.
- Winner of the main men’s race, in 28 min 22 sec, was Dewi Griffiths.
- Winner of the main women’s race (in 31 min 58 sec – a new course record) was Calli Thackery.
- Winner of the 10k wheelchair race (in 31 min 05 sec) was Owain Terrell.
A number of other races took place, including 1k and 3k races for juniors and a mascot race in which the winner scooped £100 for charity. The total number of entrants topped 4,100.
Participants and spectators enjoyed the event village with food, drink and entertainment.
Cllr Robert Francis-Davies, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Investment, Regeneration and Tourism, said: “We thank all those who came to run and watch the 43rd staging of this great event.
“The Swansea Bay 10k is a key part of Swansea’s annual events calendar and is one of the best events of its kind in the UK. As always, there was a great, family-friendly atmosphere.
“It’s fantastic to see so many familiar faces return year after year to an event that’s been in existence for more than four decades.
“Many runners now return with their children and grandchildren. It’s also great to see so many former entrants of the junior 1k and 3k races now take part in the main 10k.
“I’m delighted to announce that the race will return next year on September 14, with entries opening soon.”
A number of temporary road closures were essential to ensure the safety of runners and spectators – and to help make the event a success. Cllr Francis-Davies thanked residents and businesses affected by the changes.
It was the 18th occasion that Admiral has sponsored the event. Other sponsors included Princes Gate Water – who provided the runners with fine Welsh water in 100% recycled plastic bottles they will collect and recycle – The Secret Bar & Kitchen, and Days Motor Group.
Lorna Connelly, Head of People at Admiral, said, “We’re delighted to have sponsored the Swansea Bay 10k once again this year. It’s been great to see so much excitement for this race, including from our very own Admiral colleagues who took part. Well done to everyone!”
