Caerphilly Council faces tough decisions to bridge £45m budget gap

Caerphilly County Borough Council

The Leader of Caerphilly county borough council is preparing the community for a number of difficult decisions, as the council works hard to plug a £45million gap in its budget over the next two years.

Over recent weeks, the council has been asking residents across the county borough to have their say on plans relating to the future of a number of key services – namely the councils Meals Direct Service, Blackwood Miners Institute and Llancaiach Fawr Manor House.

Cllr Sean Morgan said, “These are very difficult things to consider, but the council is faced with unprecedented financial constraints and we must make huge savings in order to balance our budget.”

The consultation period ended last week (10 September) and the authority is now carefully considering all the feedback received from residents. The next step will see the council’s Cabinet meeting on Wednesday 25th September to review the feedback and make a final decision on these matters.

Cllr Morgan continued, “There has been a key development about the proposals for the future of Blackwood Miners Institute. As a result of the charitable status of Blackwood Miners Institute and the council’s role as trustees, we are currently taking advice on the most appropriate mechanism for decision-making. Once this advice has been considered, we will prepare the final report and will keep the community and staff updated on this matter in due course.”

“We will update the community about the decision relating to Llancaiach Fawr and the Meals Direct Service following the Cabinet meeting next week – and further announcements are likely over the coming months about other service reviews,” said Cllr Morgan.

“I would urge everyone to continue to have your say, so you can help us shape the way we deliver your services in the future,” he added.
