Independent living support hub moves to Newport central library building

A support hub set up by Newport City Council to help people live independently in their own homes has moved into the city’s central library building.

The Smart Hub, which was previously in Newport Market, is the place to go to find out more about assistive technology.

Assistive technology is anything that helps people live safely and independently in their own home.

Some of the tech on display includes the Komp, an age-friendly video screen that enables elderly people to connect with those most important to their health and wellbeing.

The Komp is easier to use than any tablet or smartphone, with no digital skills or training required.

Other smart tech on display includes the Amazon Alexa, Ring doorbells and Hive heating systems, as well as remote control curtains, telecare systems and various motion or fall sensors.

Visitors to the hub can speak to members of the council’s occupational therapy team to find out how these pieces of kit have helped others.

The team are also on hand to help with any queries visitors might have about getting an assessment for support with assistive technology, either for themselves or someone they know.

The Hub was officially opened in its new home this week by Councillor Dimitri Batrouni, leader of the council, and Councillor Laura Lacey, cabinet member for social services.

“It was great to be able to visit the Smart Hub this week in its new home in the central library building to see for myself the different pieces of kit that are available to residents,” said Councillor Lacey.

“There are many ways that technology can help those with care and support needs, from helping connect them with loved ones, to more everyday tasks such as switching lighting and heating on and off.

“We are here to help, and I would encourage anyone who thinks they could benefit from our support to get in touch and make an appointment.”

The hub is located on the first floor of the building, next to the library.

The hub is currently appointment only. Appointments to visit the hub can be booked over the phone by calling 01633 656656 and asking for the occupational therapy team, online through the council website, or by emailing [email protected].
