Môr a Sawna has just won the prestigious Retail & Tourism Business of the Year at the 2024 South Wales Business Awards after just 17 weeks open.

Nominated for both Retail & Tourism Business of the Year and Start-up of the Year (Micro), this win is an extraordinary achievement for the small business after such a short time in operation.

Opened in June, the wood-burning barrel sauna sits in the heart of quiet Jackson’s Bay in Barry Island. Môr A Sawna has already become a standout attraction, proving a hit with locals and the many cold water swimming enthusiasts in the area. The first permanent sauna of its kind in the Vale of Glamorgan, it has captured attention for its breathtaking location overlooking the harbour, lighthouse and coastline.

Owner Kathryn Donovan said: “I am incredibly honoured and moved to receive this award so early in our journey. My goal was to create a space that fosters community and supports both mental and physical health, and it’s amazing to see that vision resonate with so many people. I couldn’t have done it without my fantastic customers and the incredible community we’ve built in such a short time”.

Kathryn added: “This award is not just a recognition of our hard work, but a testament to the need for spaces that prioritise mental health. I’m excited to continue growing our community and to welcome even more people to the Vale of Glamorgan to experience what Môr a Sawna has to offer”.

The wood-fired sauna heats up to a toasty 80-100 degrees and comfortably seats up to 10 people. The sauna experience is enhanced by cold showers, a cold plunge pool, or the option to dip into the nearby sea for contrast therapy, which is known to reduce inflammation, promote deeper sleep, and alleviate stress.

Môr a Sawna also offers special sessions, including Sunrise Saunas and After Dark specials. With a background in mental health, Kathryn focuses on using alternative and natural therapies to create a calming and transformative atmosphere. She also hosts wellness events such as ‘Yoga and Sauna’ sessions, designed to boost wellbeing and mental health.

Môr a Sawna’s success is a boost not only for the local tourism sector but also for the wider community, as wellness tourism becomes an increasingly popular trend. Kathryn aims to encourage everyone to experience the benefits for themselves, from newbies to wild swimming enthusiasts and athletes.

Overlooking the scenic Bristol Channel, Môr a Sawna blends nature, tranquillity and wellness. A unique wellness experience in the Vale of Glamorgan region, this small business is poised to make a big impact in the coming months.
