Hanging baskets getting set to bring colour to Swansea

IN a serene, peaceful corner of Singleton Park, finishing touches are being put to thousands of flowers that will brighten up Swansea this summer.

Experts from Swansea Council’s parks service are now treating over 1,000 hanging baskets, 900 lamp-post displays and 200 flower troughs with tender loving care in readiness for their delivery to businesses and residents later this month.

The council has taken on four extra seasonal staff until October to help with the orders, which take now up two giant, multi-span greenhouses behind closed doors at the city’s Botanical Gardens attraction.

Proceeds from the orders, already worth more than £90,000, are being reinvested back into council services for the benefit of residents across the city.

Online orders, which have generated over £8,000 in recent months, are available at www.swansea.gov.uk/hangingbasketsOpens new window until the end of May.

Communities including Killay, Clydach and Morriston are among those that will benefit from the floral displays.

In the city centre, businesses including No Sign Wine Bar, Astley’s, Park Street Tattoo and Specsavers have all placed orders. Areas of High Street, Dyfatty and Uplands will also benefit, along with Castle Square, where five, three-tier floral displays and 18 lamp-post baskets will be introduced.

Each hanging basket, lamp-post basket and flower trough contains over 20 plants, including geraniums, creeping jennies and begonias.

Robert Francis-Davies, Cabinet Member for Culture, Tourism and Major Projects, said:

“The hanging baskets will complement everything else we’re doing across Swansea this summer to make the city as aesthetically pleasing as possible.

“The huge number of orders we’ll be delivering in coming weeks speaks volumes for the popularity of our hanging basket scheme.

“Together with our wild flowers initiative and Clyne in Bloom next month the hundreds of hanging baskets, lamp-post displays and flower troughs will ensure Swansea is a riot of colour over the summer months, helping further improve the appearance of a city that’s already renowned for its coastal beauty.”
