‘Proud Councils’ brings together the majority of councils in South Wales in a visible and unified way, to support and promote equality for LGBTQ+ communities.

This year will see Rhondda Cynon Taf, Merthyr, Cardiff, Newport, Caerphilly, Torfaen, Blaenau Gwent and Bridgend actively taking part in the 2019 event.

On Saturday 24th August, Proud Councils will be taking part in the Pride Cymru Parade through Cardiff city centre, which will see LGBTQ+ staff, Allies, Councillors and associated community groups march together to visibly show each council’s commitment and support of the LGBTQ+ community in Wales and around the world.

Proud Councils will also have a stall at Pride Cymru’s Big Weekend on the 24th and 25th August, talking with visitors to discuss how councils can improve upon service delivery, access and inclusion, and prevent discrimination for LGBTQ+ residents and employees, as well as signposting to services offered by councils and partners.

Councillor Maureen Webber, Deputy Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf and Cabinet Member with responsibility for Equalities said: “Through all Councils working in partnership, we are able to reassure our LGBTQ+ communities and employees that we are committed to equality of opportunity and inclusion.

“Proud Councils highlights the steadfast commitment councils in South Wales have to promoting respect and diversity in our communities, and that Welsh public services work to deliver for everyone, regardless of race, sexuality, gender identity, age, disability or religion.

“Last year was the launch year of ‘Proud Councils’ which was a huge success. Many colleagues and elected members from all Councils, along with their friends and families, marched together to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community and promote equality.

“This year, we expect even more colleagues to attend, with even more visibility than in previous years. With this year marking the 50th Anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, which was a catalyst for LGBTQ+ rights and activism, the atmosphere at Pride Cymru 2019 is expected to be electric!

“I encourage all that are able to attend Pride Cymru to join in this uniquely Welsh LGBTQ+ celebration, with all councils looking forward to engaging with everyone who attends.”
