Celebrations were in full swing at HC-One’s Trafalgar Park care home in Treharris, Caerphilly as Resident Ellen was thrown a special 100th birthday party.

Born in Ystrad Mynach on 27th September 1919, Ellen Marie Hellings served as a wren in the Women’s Royal Naval Service during World War 2 before becoming a lunch lady at her local school.

Ellen married her childhood sweetheart Basil, with whom she had one daughter, two grandchildren and a number of great grandchildren with.

In her spare time, the centenarian enjoyed a variety of different hobbies, including knitting, reading, going to the chapel and shopping.

When asked what her secret is to a long and happy life, Ellen said it was down to having lots of fun and leading a happy life.

Staff at Trafalgar Park arranged a special birthday party to mark Ellen’s big day, as family, friends and fellow Residents were invited to join in with the celebrations.

As Ellen’s birthday landed on Harvest Festival, the celebrations included lots of marvellous food and entertainment, as Marie enjoyed her delicious birthday cake and opened her 100th birthday card from the Queen.

Leah Mort, Home Manager at Trafalgar Park, said: “At HC-One, we make every effort to ensure our Residents celebrate their special occasions in the best way possible.

“Ellen is a lovely lady and such an inspiration to the whole team at Trafalgar Park, as well as fellow Residents. It was amazing to see her smiling all day long as she celebrated her 100th birthday alongside her loved ones.”
