The HLM Cardiff studio has been appointed to design the new extension for Techniquest, Wales’ popular science discovery centre in Cardiff Bay, which focuses on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
Educational charity Techniquest was established over 30 years ago and is one of the oldest science centre’s operating in the UK,
As part of a project, known as The Science Capital, the new extension will result in the size of the building almost doubling, forming a key part of Techniquest’s repositioning exercise to extend and diversify its audiences to ensure a sustainable long-term future in Wales.
The extension will sensitively connect into the existing building, transforming the current facility into a contemporary STEM hub, along with the provision of additional exhibition space to house new innovative content that will be developed with Welsh STEM innovators, academics and communities.
With a unique approach that includes drawing together the most skilled team from across its UK network, HLM has been responsible for designing inspirational educational buildings throughout Wales and the UK, including the new extension and refurbishment that has transformed Llantwit Major School, and creating the Learning and Teaching Hub for Glasgow University.
Patrick Arends, HLM’s Sector Lead for Hospitality, Leisure and Culture says:
“It’s a privilege to be working alongside the Techniquest team and Lee Wakemans to design and deliver the extension. Techniquest is a community and educational institution in Wales and it’s close to our hearts.
“The new extension will provide the needed additional exhibition space for Techniquest to serve its local communities, as well as allowing the flexibility to host other types of events. This extension creates a perfect opportunity to look at the operation of Techniquest in a holistic way whilst making sure that every pound spent on this expansion project goes as far as possible.”
HLM has appointed Hydrock as local engineers and Wardell Armstrong as planning consultant.
Lesley Kirkpatrick, CEO of Techniquest, said:
“We are pleased to appoint a design consortium led by HLM Architects for our exciting Science Capital extension.
“There was strong interest shown by a number of excellent design teams who all displayed enthusiasm and imagination in their bids for this ambitious project.
“HLM particularly stood out for their thoughtful consideration of the brief, approach to the project and their excellent team dynamics.
“With a proven track record in creating exciting places for both young people and adults, HLM supported by Hydrock and Wardell Armstrong, demonstrated their ability to deliver our project.
“Commissioning local suppliers on this project is part of a commitment to working with our communities to better serve their needs and we’re excited to take this forward.”
