The popular bakery will close all of its branches on Tuesday 24th March, the chain has confirmed.

Greggs had vowed to stay open for as long as possible, since the Prime Minister announced on Friday that all restaurants should close – other than those offering a takeaway service.

In a post on social media, Greggs said:

“We’ve been doing everything we can to keep our shops open and everyone safe but it has become clear that to help us all maintain social distance we need to go further and close all of our shops completely.

“So, we have made the difficult decision to close all of our shops on Tuesday 24th March”.

There were noticeable changes in Greggs shops in Cardiff over the weekend, with many introducing their own social distancing measures.

On Saturday, all but one of the eight Greggs bakeries in Cardiff city centre were open. This branch in St David’s Shopping Centre had limited customers to two inside its shop at any one time, while others had no such measures.

When passing, customers appeared to be adhering to the measures in place.

The bakery has said it plans to support its workers with full contract hours for as long as they are able, although they will “keep this under review as the situation develops.”

They will also continue to support local communities by “distributing any remaining unsold food and offering support for those in hardship through the Greggs Foundation.”
