Thin and dehydrated baby wild rabbit found in Bridgend

The tiny and unwell rabbit was found in Bridgend by a concerned member of the public last month with the RSPCA being contacted.

RSPCA wildlife officer Ellie West subsequently took the rabbit into her care.

“This young rabbit was found in a very thin body condition, was dehydrated and cold,” she said. “She was checked over by the vets and was fine, but needed continual care.

“She was too young to be away from mum so we put her in an incubator to warm her up and hand-reared her. She started to feel much better with a full tummy!”

On Monday (30 March) Ellie transferred the tiny rabbit to RSPCA West Hatch Wildlife Centre in Taunton for further rehabilitation. The centre – which is continuing to tend to animals amid the Covid-19 outbreak – is already caring for a rabbit of a similar age.

“I was so pleased that she began to gain weight well – and doubled her weight in two weeks to 200 grams. At the wildlife centre they will continue to ensure she will grow and get strong enough for her to be released back into the wild.”

Although RSPCA centres have closed to the public, staff at the four wildlife centres are busy caring for 674 animals including hedgehogs, swans and seals, and rehabilitating them to be released back into the wild.
