Swansea Scouts reach out to local care homes during lockdown

A Scout group from Swansea has teamed up with two local care homes in an effort to reach out to residents who may be struggling with loneliness during lockdown.

The Covid-19 pandemic has left many of us feeling isolated and cut-off from the outside world, but for those living in care homes the effects of not being able to see loved ones for over 3-months has proved to be extremely difficult to cope with.

During one of their weekly Zoom meetings, the 20th Swansea (1st Morriston) Scouts voiced their concerns for the elderly residing in care homes and the potential impact that the lockdown is having on them. They made the decision that they had to do something to help.

Since April, residents of Ael y Bryn Care Home and Hollies Care Home have been receiving handwritten letters and drawings from the Scouts who hope that they can spread some happiness during this worrying time.

Debbie Whyte, Group Scout Leader of the 20th Swansea (1st Morriston) Scout Group said: “We are so proud of our young people for taking the time to look after the elderly in our community.

“The pandemic has been a huge source of concern for everyone, but our Scouts recognised that the residents of care homes will be feeling even more anxious and lonely than us and really wanted to put smiles on their faces.

“The work we have done with the care homes has been such a great experience for everyone involved and we intend to keep working with them during the remainder of the lockdown and after it has been lifted.

“Our young people can’t wait until it is safe for us to visit the care homes so that they can meet all of the lovely residents. Although this may be a while away, it’s something positive for everyone to look forward to.”

Rhian Moore, Chief Commissioner of ScoutsCymru, said: “Scouting has been proven to develop strong community engagement in young people and this has really shone through during the lockdown period.

“This unprecedent pandemic has proven to be really challenging for young people, parents and carers. So, to see the young people putting their own concerns aside to try and brighten the day of the elderly is truly heart-warming.

“We are extremely proud of their hard work and the selflessness they have shown by dedicating their time to help others.”
