There’s a spectrum of different designs and materials for internal doors, and it’s always exceptionally surprising to see new innovations that have been made. With that said, though, there are four main materials that doors are made from, and they each have their individual strengths and weaknesses.
Here, let’s talk about these main kinds of doors, and how they can boost your home in more ways than just aesthetic!
Hardwood and Solid Wood
This won’t be terribly surprising, but sometimes it’s important to state the obvious to ensure that everyone is on the same page: both hardwood doors and solid wood doors are made of pieces of wood. By this, we mean that the wood used in these doors has been felled from a tree and processed into panels and planks, in just the way that you would expect.
A hardwood door is one composed of several different pieces of wood. This may include a main flat panel that forms the main body, as well as surface detailing and trim made from shaped and carved wood.
A solid wood door, however, is typically made from a single piece of wood. Usually, this means that the door is formed of a single panel that has had details carved into it, but it can also mean that the panels are made from a single piece of wood, with the frame being made of something else.
The main benefit of hardwood and solid wood doors is that they’re very durable since the wood they’re made from hasn’t been interfered with an awful lot. Also, these durable doors can have great soundproofing qualities: thick wood with very few air pockets does not conduct sound well.
Glazed Doors
Glazed doors are simply doors that have panels of glass within them. This means that these glass doors can allow for improved light flow through a home, allowing for reduced electricity costs, and a more naturally lit home environment.
As well as the lighting benefit mentioned above, glazed doors offer a timelessness that other doors often cannot match. Pairing simple glass, even if it’s obscured or patterned, with neutral-tone wood leads to a rich, wholesome, and relaxed feel in a home.
Moulded Doors
For many years, moulded doors have particularly been selected because they’re notably cheaper than other options. These doors are made from wood fibres that have been compressed into the door shape that you want, whether that’s a flat slab or a 6-panel design. These designs can be pressed into doors whether they’re hollow or solid, meaning that you can have creative choices even when working on a particularly tight budget.
Aside from the low cost, the main benefit of moulded doors is that they’re very light and easy to work with. This can lead to a reduction in labour costs since many people can install the doors themselves, or a skilled professional can install the doors particularly quickly.
Internal doors can be made from a whole host of materials and in a range of different ways. However, it’s important to consider that wood, in any form, is typically the most popular for its combination of affordability, durability, and visual flexibility.
