Active travel measures introduced to east of Barry

The Vale of Glamorgan Council has introduced a range of measures to help people become more active in the east of Barry.

Following a public consultation on this subject in December, there has been improved provision for pedestrians on Langlands Road, Dobbins Road and through the Pencoedtre and Meadowvale Estates.

This work has included the installation of dropped kerbs, tactile paving and raised kerbs for access to buses.

The aim of the scheme is to upgrade active travel routes, which cater for cyclists and those on foot, to local schools, St Richard Gwyn, Palmerston and Cadoxton Primary.

Access to shops and other local amenities will also be enhanced, with the project completed before Christmas.

Cllr Bronwen Brooks, Vale of Glamorgan Council Cabinet Member for Sustainable Places said: “These changes will encourage people to adopt more environmentally friendly forms of transport.

“Travelling on foot or bike instead of using a motorised vehicle is not only beneficial for health and wellbeing, it is also much better for the planet as it all but eliminates pollution. We hope this project will encourage residents to ditch the car.

“This aligns with the Council’s Project Zero commitment to become carbon neutral by 2030. We also want to encourage others to live greener lives and the creation of Active Travel Routes should help achieve that.”

A consultation on a potential active travel route along Coldbrook Road East, which would provide better access to schools in the area, as well as other key destinations, has also launched.

Those interested in learning more and having their say can do so online until November 18.
