Following a record-breaking, sell-out tour in 2022, An Inspector Calls is back on the road, captivating audiences across the UK once again. This gripping production, directed by Stephen Daldry and brought to life by the multi-award-winning National Theatre, is now showing at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff from Tuesday, 18th February to Saturday, 22nd February 2025.
J.B. Priestley’s iconic thriller remains as enthralling today as it was when it first graced the stage. Whether you’re discovering it for the first time or revisiting its powerful themes, this is a must-see production. A staple of the GCSE English Literature curriculum, An Inspector Calls continues to resonate with audiences of all ages, and tonight’s opening performance at the Donald Gordon Theatre was packed with eager students, keen to experience the drama live.
A Story That Stands the Test of Time
The opening scene, with an air raid siren, hazy smoke, and rain, immediately transported the audience back to the time when An Inspector Calls was written, creating an atmospheric and immersive experience.
Set in 1912, the play introduces us to the affluent Birling family, enjoying an intimate engagement celebration for their daughter Sheila. Their evening takes a dramatic turn when Edna, the parlour maid, announces the unexpected arrival of Inspector Goole. As the mysterious inspector begins his inquiry into the tragic death of a young woman, it soon becomes clear that each family member has a connection to the unfolding mystery. Their seemingly idyllic world unravels as long-held secrets come to light, and the tension escalates with every revelation.

The staging was particularly striking, with the Birling’s house cleverly designed to open up and reveal the family’s dining room. The décor inside was typical of the 1920s, featuring heavy fabrics and dark colours that reinforced the tone of the play. As the family’s contributions to the young woman’s death became more apparent, the upturned dining table and smashed china added to the growing sense of chaos and tension, visually emphasising the breakdown of their perfect façade.
Through its gripping narrative, the play explores four key themes: social responsibility, age, gender, and class. The inspector’s probing questions force both characters and audience alike to reflect on their own impact on society—echoing Priestley’s belief in collective responsibility and the idea that we are all part of a greater community.
