Based in Porthmadog on the edge of The Snowdonia National Park, Baavet is renowned for its high-quality wool bedding. Since 2009, the company has raised awareness of wool as a sustainable and ethical sleep solution while championing British wool, local farming, and ethical sourcing.
Baavet’s story began when Roger and Lesley Payne moved to North Wales over 20 years ago to manage a traditional hill sheep and cattle farm. Faced with the challenge of sustaining their farm, the couple created a new source of income making British wool duvets. With the support of a large lottery grant, the business later moved to a modern production facility in Porthmadog, enabling Baavet to expand with new machinery and job opportunities.
Their company received increased interest when they appeared on BBC’s Dragon’s Den. Although they turned down an offer of investment, Roger and Lesley gained valuable exposure for their business after appearing on the show. After hard work and determination, they’ve turned Baavet into a thriving business with a turnover exceeding £1 million.
Their reputation for quality and sustainability is widely recognised. With over 8k followers on Facebook and a 4.8 score on TrustPilot, customers continue to praise the quality of Baavet’s duvets.
Notably, in 2023, the company partnered with Sandringham Estate to produce British wool bedding to mark Wool Month. Using wool sourced from King Charles’ sheep, the collaboration encouraged people to shop sustainably. The company further solidified their status in 2024 as Baavet was shortlisted for the Made in Britain Awards. Their shortlist nomination for Sustainability Initiative of the Year 2024 reflects their dedication to eco-friendly practices and ethical sourcing.
Baavet’s products are stocked in stores across Wales and the UK, including Hafren Furnishers, The Wool Croft, and Trefriw Woollen Mills. Additionally, Baavet duvets are used by many accommodation providers.
The company has also expanded their duvet range to include organic wool options that reflect its ongoing mission to cater to diverse customer needs while upholding its environmental commitment. They use 100% organic wool sourced from Soil Association certified farms and 100% natural cotton that carries the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certification.
Speaking in February, Roger Payne reflected on Baavet’s journey and commitment to sustainability, saying:
“We’ve always believed in the power of wool—not just as a fantastic natural material but as a way to support British farming and sustainable living. Seeing more people embrace wool bedding and recognise its benefits is incredibly rewarding.”
As Baavet continues to innovate and inspire, the company remains dedicated to promoting wool bedding as a natural, eco-friendly alternative to synthetic materials. For those seeking sustainable comfort, Baavet duvets stand as a symbol of quality and craftsmanship, rooted in the traditions of British wool.
