Bridgend Students Win £1,000 for MS Society Cymru

Year 8T students raise awareness for MS Society

Bridgend, Wales (July 2024) – MS Society Cymru is thrilled to announce that a group of Year 8 students from Bryntirion Comprehensive School in Bridgend has won the First Give competition, securing a £1,000 prize for the charity. This victory brings their total donation to an impressive £1,305, marking a significant achievement in youth-led fundraising and awareness efforts for Multiple Sclerosis (MS).

The First Give School Final, held on Thursday, 11th July, saw 13-year-old students Pranay, Ben, Iestyn, Ollie, Kathleen, and Daniel from class 8T deliver a powerful presentation about MS and the work of MS Society Cymru. Their dedication, creativity, and passion for the cause set them apart from seven other presentations, ultimately earning them the top prize.

The panel of judges included Ian Spiller, Councillor for Bryntirion and Laleston with Merthyr Mawr; Anthony Berrow, Councillor for Laleston, Bryntirion, Broadlands and Merthyr Mawr; Revd Edward Evans, Chair of governors; Ravi Pawar, Headteacher; Ben Thomas, Head of Year 8; and Siobhan Sullivan, Assistant Head of Year 8.

Councillor Ian Spiller, commented: “All the presentations were outstanding, but the commitment and connection shown by Year 8T shone through.”

Ceri Bevan, Community Fundraiser for MS Society Cymru, who attended the event, was deeply moved by the students’ presentation. “The awareness-raising has been incredible,” Ceri remarked. “Their presentation on MS and the MS Society nearly brought me to tears. This is what our work is all about – inspiring young people to make a real difference in their communities.”

The students were inspired to support MS Society Cymru after an impactful presentation by Ceri Bevan and learning that one of their classmate’s parents lives with MS. This personal connection motivated the class to go above and beyond in their fundraising efforts. Alongside competing for the £1,000 First Give prize, the students organised additional fundraising activities, raising £305 through a raffle. They not only raised funds but also effectively spread awareness and information about MS to their peers and the wider community.

Lloyd Rowe, Head of Skills at Bryntirion Comprehensive School, expressed pride in the students’ achievements: “We’re incredibly proud of our Year 8 class for their dedication to this cause. Their enthusiasm, creativity, and hard work in supporting MS Society Cymru have been truly inspiring. This project not only raised significant funds for a vital cause but also helped our students develop important skills in leadership, teamwork, and community engagement.”

The First Give School Final showcased the students’ hard work and creativity. Their victory highlights the impact that young people can have when they engage with local charities and social issues.
