A small family owned pet food company in West Wales has beaten multinational and private equity owned brands in the Which? Magazine Consumers Association first ever dog food brand survey.

Burns Pet Nutrition, based in Kidwelly in Carmarthenshire, came top in the survey which highlights Which? members’ favourite pet food brands, ranked by customer response.

    Which? wrote:

“Burns dog food impresses with an incredible 92% customer score in our first ever Which? Dog food brand survey.

“Sitting at the top [of] our table, Burns dog food comes 1st out of 24 dog food brands beating popular brands Royal Canin and Hill’s Science Plan.” (Which Report 2019)

Burns Pet Nutrition is the brainchild of Veterinary Surgeon, John Burns, who also trained in acupuncture and traditional oriental medicine before starting the business from his garage back in 1993.  The company now has a turnover of around £24 million with over 100 employees, the majority of which are employed in Carmarthenshire.

John Burns said: “Ever since I started Burns Pet Nutrition, I knew I had the best product on the market but with no money to spend on huge advertising budget. We relied instead on word-of-mouth from pet owners, vets and pet shops which is a more genuine type of marketing. We have spent profits instead on our charity The John Burns Foundation.

“We are all about giving back to community, charities, and rescues across the UK and many of our customers also want to help give back with every bag they buy.  We encounter many pet owners who have said that they thought their pets were healthy until they changed to Burns, where they then saw improvements in general health, skin and digestive condition and even behaviour.  This survey highlights what we’ve known for a long time, but I’m absolutely delighted to get this recognition.”
