The Leader of Caerphilly county borough council, Cllr Philippa Marsden, has called for a report to be drawn up by engineers to consider further options to improve highway safety along the B4251, known locally as ‘Wyllie bends’.
Last year, the council carried out a range of safety improvements along the route including:
- Reducing the speed limit to 40mph
- Erecting chevron signs at relevant bends along the route
- Solid white lining to restrict overtaking manoeuvres
- Improvements to the carriageway surface
- Further vegetation clearance to provide clear visibility of all signage.
However, it has been agreed following a recent site visit by the Leader of Council and the Chief Executive, that further measures could be considered to improve road safety, particularly following significant tree felling along the roadside.
CCBC Leader and local ward member, Cllr Philippa Marsden said, “This site has been the scene of a number of accidents over recent years and we are keen to do all we can to reduce the chance of further incidents in future.”
“I share the views of the community and believe that more could be done to strengthen the existing measures, so a report will be presented to Cabinet in the near future for us to explore further options.”
Cllr John Ridgewell, Cabinet Member responsible for highways added, “We take road safety seriously and do everything possible to reduce the risk for all highway users across the whole county borough. The safety of the community is paramount and our highway engineers will now investigate potential solutions that will help make this stretch of road even safer for the travelling public in future.”
