Caerphilly County Borough Council Sport & Leisure Services start plans to reopen after Welsh Government announce that indoor sports facilities can reopen from Monday 10th August.
Following careful consideration, the Welsh Government has announced today that indoor sports facilities can plan to reopen. This will enable leisure facilities such as swimming pools and indoor fitness suites to reopen to the public from Monday 10th August on a phased basis provided the appropriate measures have been considered to keep users safe.
Caerphilly County Borough Council Sport & Leisure Services will now finalise a comprehensive reopening plan to ensure that all necessary guidelines are in place to allow for the safe reopening of Caerphilly’s leisure centres.
During the coronavirus pandemic, Leisure Lifestyle staff have been busy making sure that Caerphilly’s leisure centres are reconfigured in a way to allow for safe use. Since the beginning of lockdown, staff from across the Sport & Leisure Services have also supported a number of key service areas and have played a vital role in the council’s business continuity efforts. These efforts include supporting the Free School Meals programme, supporting the Household Waste Recycling Centres, the Test, Track and Trace programme along with providing facilities to our valued refuse and cleansing teams during their daily collection rounds. This work will also continue over the August period with the delivery of Sport Hwbs for key workers at a number of Leisure Centre’s.
With today’s announcement, the Sport & Leisure Services will now look to announce which facilities will initially reopen and on what date in the coming weeks.
Cllr Nigel George, the Cabinet Member with the responsibility for Environment and Neighbourhood Services commented:
“I am extremely pleased by the Welsh Government’s announcement to allow indoor leisure facilities to reopen in Wales. The Sport & Leisure Services have worked tirelessly throughout the Coronavirus pandemic to ensure that the council’s key services that so many residents rely upon were carried out without disruption. It is now time for our loyal staff to return to our leisure centres to do what they do best – get more people, more active – more often.
We will confirm a reopening date as soon as possible – once the appropriate measures have been taken to welcome you back safely.”
When our leisure centres return – new measures will be in place in the interest of customer safety. These measures will include:
- Social distancing
- Pre-booked sessions
- Contactless payments
- One way systems
- Additional cleaning of equipment
- Condensed opening hours (to allow for extra cleaning)
