Cardiff Bus has announced a series of extra services for those looking for great local days out this summer.

The operator has recognised that this summer will see more and more of us will be looking to stay closer to home, so in response has developed a series of extra summer services which will run alongside its main network. These include:

    • Increased baycar service and a revised route which will now start at Kingsway for Cardiff Castle, Bute Park and National Museum of Wales.
    • An open-top service between Cardiff, Cardiff Bay and Penarth Pier and Esplanade.
    • A fast, direct, daily link from Llanrumney, St. Mellons, Trowbridge, Rumney, Tremorfa and Splott to Cardiff Bay and Barry Island (from 26th July)

These extra services will commence on Saturday 26th June and run daily up-to and including Monday 30th August.

For days out in Cardiff Bay, Cardiff Bus’ baycar will run every 15 minutes daily and will start ffrom Kingsway in the city centre for easy access to and from Cardiff Castle, Bute Park and National Museum of Wales as well as offering convenient connections to more of its services. At the Cardiff Bay end of the route, the baycar will start and end at the Wales Millennium Centre, which is central for all activities in the Bay this summer. The journey will take just 10 minutes from the city centre and passengers can connect to and from the baycar at Kingsway, Westgate Street or St. Mary Street (Wyndham Arcade).

To enjoy the friendly and relaxing atmosphere and cafés at Penarth Pier and Esplanade, passengers can take advantage of this Summer’s new open-top route. Running every day and operating hourly, including a stop at Cardiff Bay, the new service offers a pleasant open top ride where passengers can take in the spectacular views over Cardiff Bay and Penarth.

For those looking for a traditional day at the seaside, Cardiff Bus are running an additional route to Barry Island.  As well as Route 95 which departs from the city centre, the bus operator will run an Island Flyer route from St Mellons, Llanrumney and Tremorfa which will allow passengers to travel to Barry Island direct with a grandstand view on double deck buses. Island Flyer’s will run daily from 26th July until 30th August, linking eastern Cardiff directly to both Cardiff Bay and Barry Island.

The operator has also considered that a family day out can become costly, so is offering a range of value tickets, including a reduced price on family tickets during weekends and school holidays. The ticket will cost £5.50 in Cardiff and Penarth, and £8 across the network from Newport to Barry.

Gareth Stevens, Commercial Director at Cardiff Bus, said: “We know that people are looking to make the most of what’s local this summer. There is so much on offer, whether it’s the buzz of the city centre, the scenery of Cardiff Bay, the cafés and restaurants along Penarth seafront, or the sunny beach in Barry Island, and we want to make sure our passengers can take full advantage this summer.

“We have produced a handy-guide with ideas for days out across our network and these will soon be available to collect on buses as well as hub’s throughout the City. You can also download a copy from our website”

“We’ve added extra journeys to some of our existing routes, and introduced additional routes to help our customers new and old make the most out of this Summer following what has been a tough year. We are really looking forward to welcoming everyone on board.”
