At the beginning of the 2024/2025 season, Cardiff City Ladies will evolve into Gwalia United marking a new chapter for the only Welsh club in the English Football system.
Taking on the name Gwalia United, an ancient Welsh term for Wales, celebrates their cultural and historical identity alongside their commitment to the future of women’s football. Alongside aims to become the club side for Wales, they have ambitions to reach the Women’s Super League.
This new era for Gwalia United, will see them sponsored by comparison site Go.Compare in a three-year partnership which will begin at the start of the 2024/2025 season.
Julian Jenkins, Co-Owner of Cardiff City Ladies/ Gwalia United, spoke of the announcement: “Today marks the start of a really exciting new chapter for women’s club football in Wales. Gwalia United is a testament to embracing our future while honouring our storied past. Since 1975 the club has been a pioneer of women’s football, inspiring and uniting people through sport and we will carry these values forward.
“The pace at which women’s football is growing is unprecedented, and to keep up we need the collective support of Wales. We are proud of our Welsh roots, and as the only Welsh club in the English football system we want to represent our Welsh roots as we set our sights on the future. Our engagement with schools across South Wales and the strategic move to Newport Stadium are pivotal steps towards operating from a Tier 1 stadium that supports our growth ambitions. It is important to us to continue providing opportunities for girls and women to compete at the highest levels while positively impacting our communities and fostering engagement beyond the pitch.

Cardiff City Ladies remains the club’s name until the end of the 2023/24 season. They will take on the new name at the start of the 2024/2025 season, when Go.Compare will also begin its sponsorship of the club. Under the banner of “Our Club, Our Nation, Our Story” they will start the season’s campaign as Gwalia United.
