Council seeks views on proposed Neath Active Travel Masterplan

Neath Port Talbot Council is looking for feedback from residents, businesses and visitors on proposed walking, wheeling, and cycling improvements to enhance active travel options in and around Neath Town Centre.

These proposals aim to make local routes safer, more accessible, and sustainable, as part of the council’s commitment to improving health, wellbeing, and the environment, while reducing congestion.

What is Active Travel?

Active Travel refers to making everyday, short-distance journeys (e.g. commuting to work, school, or shops) by walking, cycling, or wheeling, rather than using motorised transport. It excludes trips made purely for recreation or social purposes.

Proposed Routes for Improvement

The council is focusing on general active travel improvements across Neath Town Centre with three specific routes being looked at:

•    Route 1: Neath Abbey Road, Cadoxton Road, and Bridge Street.
•    Route 2: Cadoxton Road, B4434, Riverside Road, and Prince of Wales Drive.
•    Route 3: A section of Gnoll Park Road.

Possible improvements include small-scale enhancements like dropped kerbs and tactile paving, as well as bolder changes like creating shared-use paths and introducing new safe crossing facilities for all users.

This project is still in its early stages, and no decisions have been made yet. The council is keen to hear your views and will use feedback from residents to review and refine the potential ideas presented.

Have Your Say!

The council values your feedback, which will help shape and refine the project ideas:

•    Online Feedback: Visit www.npt.gov.uk/activetravel to view project information and to access the online survey.
•    Physical plans and a questionnaire are also provided at Neath Library.

Feedback will be accepted until 7th April 2025.

Active Travel Funding

Implementation of the proposed measures will be subject to the council receiving grant funding from the Welsh Government.  It is important for residents to note that Active Travel funding can only be used by the council for improvements to walking, cycling and wheeling projects and cannot be used for any other purpose.
