Crucial Crew event teaches Year 6 pupils about safety within the community

Year 6 learners across primary schools with the county borough have recently attended the Crucial Crew event.

Crucial Crew is an event that provides skills to young learners who are on the cusp of attending secondary school, providing them the opportunity to acquire essential skills at an impressionable time in their development.

The event is an effective way of raising awareness from several professional agencies, to ensure pupils are provided with crucial information as they become more independent on their transition to secondary school.

The following agencies attended the event and presented information on staying safe and hazards to look out for:

  • CCBC Road safety – The importance of wearing seat belts, wearing them correctly, and the consequences of not doing so.
  • Transport for Wales – The hazards and dangers of rail safety.
  • Wales & West Utilities – Gas safety with regards to gas leaks and carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • National Grid Electric Distribution – Safety around electricity including themes around substations, overhead wires, street furniture, and hidden dangers.
  • Resolve It CIC – Personal safety around non-aggressive behaviour and protecting your own personal space.
  • South Wales Fire & Rescue Service  Fire safety, including grass fires and the consequences of starting deliberate grass fires.
  • RNLI – Water safety measures including how to stay safe at the beach and around rivers.
  • Dogs Trust – How to treat dogs and how to stay safe around dogs who belong to others.
