External works complete £10.2m Hirwaun Primary School project

RCT Council has celebrated completion of its 21stCentury Schools investment at Hirwaun Primary School – as contractor Morgan Sindall has now finished external elements of the school grounds to fully-deliver the £10.2m project.

Staff and pupils moved into their brand new school building during November 2020, which has provided a modern and stimulating learning environment to replace the school’s old buildings. Catchment changes will come into effect in September 2021, which will see pupils from the Penderyn area welcomed to Hirwaun Primary School. The Council has benefitted from a 62% contribution from Welsh Government’s 21st Century Schools and Colleges Programme, complementing its own significant funding towards the project.

After the new school building was completed in November 2020, the Council’s contractor turned its focus to the external elements of the school grounds.

This included demolition of the old school buildings and the creation of two Multi Use Games Areas (MUGAs), a grass sports field, a woodland learning area, bike shelters, a yard and car park. The work is substantially complete, and the contractor handed the site back to the Council on Friday, April 30.

There is some small outstanding work to be completed in the upcoming school half term, to add markings to the MUGAs and the yard. The new grass sports field has been seeded and will be brought into use in the future. Upon completion of the new school, Morgan Sindall has donated new football and netball kits to Hirwaun Primary to complement the new sports facilities.

Councillor Joy Rosser, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member for Education and Inclusion Services, said: “I’m delighted the outdoor areas of Hirwaun Primary School are now complete, which has fully-delivered the transformational £10.2m investment for the school and the wider community – marking the project handover from contractor Morgan Sindall to the Council.

“I had the pleasure of visiting staff and pupils using their new facilities in November 2020 and it was great to see how the fantastic new environment is a clear upgrade on the former school buildings, bringing with it exciting new opportunities for pupils in their learning. This is the latest 21st Century Schools project to be delivered with significant support from Welsh Government – as the Council continues to facilitate investment in Education as a priority area.

“The Council is also currently progressing future 21st Century Schools investments at YGG Aberdâr in Cwmdare, Ysgol Gyfun Rhydywaun in Penywaun and Ffynnon Taf Primary in Taff’s Well – as well as £38m projects across the Greater Pontypridd area for September 2024 – as we look to bring the very best facilities to more young people and their communities.

“I’d like to thank the project team at Morgan Sindall for their delivery of the Hirwaun Primary School investment. They have worked very closely with the school and the Council to deliver these wonderful new facilities on time, with as minimal disruption as possible – and in the COVID-19 pandemic with the challenges that brought. They have delivered an exciting new era for the school and left a lasting legacy for future generations in Hirwaun to enjoy.”
