Funding has been secured through the Welsh Government’s Transforming Towns Programme to re-develop Castle House into a property for assisted living and over-50’s accommodation.

Following discussions between RWP Properties, the owner and developers of the property the Merthyr Tydfil CBC Regeneration and Strategic Housing Teams, Castle House was identified as an ideal property for assisted living and over 50 living provision. The proposal is to develop space for a new commercial unit at ground level and then develop a town centre building which is gated and safe for the residents consisting of 4 two-bedroom flats and 8 one-bedroom flats, all equipped with adapted bathrooms and kitchens as well as other amenities such as lifts suitable for disabled access, along with green infrastructure for cost saving benefits for residents longer term.

The first two floors of the building will be fully adapted to accommodate the needs of individuals with disabilities, and a lift will be available for access to all floors. In addition, the developer will be installing a wheelchair/electric lift and ramps from street level to further enhance accessibility for all residents. The remaining floors will be allocated to persons aged over 50 or those with accessibility needs.

Merthyr Tydfil Council are dedicated to creating a safe and secure environment for vulnerable and residents aged over 50 in the town centre. The collaboration between MTCBC, Strategic Housing, the Community Occupational Therapy (COT) Team and RWP Properties, ensures that the building will cater to the specific needs of local residents. With widened doors and full wet rooms, the delivery team strive to provide the best possible living arrangements for those with accessibility needs and are committed to filling the building to its full capacity with local residents who have an identified need.

Alyn Owen, Deputy Chief Executive of Merthyr Tydfil Council, commented: “Merthyr Tydfil Council is passionate about ensuring our vulnerable and 50+ residents in the town centre feel safe and secure. It’s important that we provide the best possible living arrangements for those who need it. We’re really excited about this collaboration and the positive impact it will have on our community. As a local authority, we are dedicated to making sure that our residents feel supported and comfortable, and we’re committed to continuing to improve their living situations.”

Richard Powell, RWP Properties Director, added: “As the developer behind the transformation of Castle House, we are thrilled to have secured funding through the Welsh Government’s Transforming Towns Programme. This project represents a significant step forward in our commitment to enhancing the quality of life for our community’s vulnerable and elderly residents.

“We are proud to collaborate with Merthyr Tydfil Council and the Community Occupational Therapy Team to create a safe, welcoming environment that not only meets the diverse needs of our residents but also fosters a sense of community. With features designed for accessibility and comfort, we believe Castle House will serve as a model for inclusive living. We look forward to bringing this vision to life and making a lasting positive impact in Merthyr Tydfil.”
