Half-Term Fun on a Budget: Top Family Activities in Neath Port Talbot

Dramatic Heart of Wales

As February half term approaches, many families are seeking fun-filled activities to keep the children entertained ¾ all without breaking the bank.

Here in Neath Port Talbot, the region known as the Dramatic Heart of Wales, there are plenty of low- and no-cost fun, family days out to experience. From welly walks to wildlife craft days, beach adventures to country park playdates, families visiting the area can discover why this region is known as the ‘hidden gem’ of South Wales.

Family Fun Days at Margam Country Park

Margam Country Park welcomes families of all ages to explore its rolling 850 acres of stunning parkland. Children can unleash their imagination and play in the fairytale village, meet the deer herd, walk the farm trail, and enjoy a ride on the land train – all fuelled by a pit-stop at Charlotte’s Pantry.

Throughout half-term, there are family-friendly activities taking place every day: starting with free wildlife crafting on Monday 24th Feb, followed by ‘fantastic physics’ on Tuesday 25th Feb (tickets from £4.50 per child), then storytelling sessions on 26th and 27th Feb, there is plenty to enjoy.

The Park will also celebrate St David’s Day from Friday 28th February with free craft sessions and activities.

Explore the ruins of Neath Abbey

Budding historians and explorers alike will love a visit to Neath Abbey this half term. The ancient ruins rise from their grassy grounds, with perfect nooks and corners for games of hide-and-seek, storytelling, and make-believe.

Neath Abbey is free to visit and is open each day from 10am.

Wrap up for a ‘welly walk’

The Dramatic Heart of Wales is home to dozens of winding walking trails, suitable for all ages.

Wrap up warm and brave the rain on a wildlife walk through Swansea Valley, discover the Coast Path route which cuts past the Tennant Canal, feel the sand crunch beneath your feet at Aberavon Beach, or shelter from the elements on a trail through Afan Forest Park’s sprawling woodland.

February is also the perfect time to visit the region’s waterfalls, with National Trust’s Aberdulais Tin Works and Falls open on Thursdays and Fridays during half term. Here, children can hear tales of Neath Port Talbot’s proud industrial heritage and marvel at the tumbling waterfalls carving through the valley.

Discover the Richard Burton Trails

2025 marks the centenary of Richard Burton, the global acting icon and Hollywood legend. Born in Pontrhydyfen in 1925, Richard Burton went onto become an Oscar-nominated star of stage of screen. Yet, his glittering career began by practicing voice projection from Port Talbot’s Margam Mountain.

Now, the new Richard Burton Trails have been created to guide visitors through his birthplace of Pontrhydyfen and his childhood streets of Taibach. Children can discover how the Dramatic Heart of Wales’ landscapes and communities inspired the actor, hearing stories of his life through the Trail’s handy QR codes.

With interactive maps, videos and photos set across the Trails telling stories of Burton’s life and legacy, the Trails offer families an alternative day out brimming with excitement and intrigue. Plan your route here.
