The next stage of consultation on proposals for significant investment in enhancing Brecon town centre’s streetscape is set to be launched.

The plans prioritise the pedestrian experience, improve connections and biodiversity, and create safe, accessible public spaces that enhance the town’s unique character. The improvements will extend along the length of the High Street, including the Struet, High Street Superior, High Street Inferior, and the Bulwark.

Feedback from previous consultations has been considered in shaping these ambitious proposals. The latest plans will be on display at Y Gaer, Brecon, from 24 February until 16 March 2025.

Cllr Jackie Charlton, Cabinet Member for a Greener Powys, explained: “The next stage of the process is to display these updated plans at Y Gaer, allowing the public to review the proposals and provide feedback. Staffed drop-in sessions will take place on 24 February from 10am to 5pm and on 12 March from 9:30am to 6:30pm, where attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss the plans in detail.

“We are committed to engaging with as many people and groups as possible, ensuring a balance of perspectives from all town centre users, including residents, local businesses, and specific user groups. Alongside the in-person consultation at Y Gaer, an online option will also be available.

“Our aim is to gather feedback from a broad range of individuals and stakeholders to finalise plans for this ambitious project. The proposals seek to revitalise Brecon town centre, making it more accessible and attractive, ultimately benefiting the local economy.”

In addition to these plans, the council has secured £800,000 in Transforming Towns grant funding to support local businesses in refurbishing properties within the town centre. This funding will help revitalise shops that have deteriorated due to a lack of investment. Both the Transforming Towns initiative and the town centre improvement plans are intended to stimulate economic growth in the area.

The plans have been developed in collaboration with consultants WSP and will be funded by the Welsh Government.
