How Animals Help People Feel Happier

If you’re struggling with low mood and a lack of motivation, adding another responsibility into your life might sound counterintuitive.

However, there’s plenty of evidence to suggest that owning a cat or a dog could provide you with the sense of fulfilment that you’ve been lacking.

From affectionate moments to energising play, pet ownership comes with so many wonderful opportunities to spend quality time together. Here’s how owning an animal could help you become the best version of yourself.

Increased activity levels

Research proves that exercise makes us more resilient to stress and can reduce the symptoms of anxiety and depression. What’s more, getting active doesn’t need to mean strenuous exercise either.

Owning a dog means that you’ll be more likely to go out on daily walks, for example, which is enough to keep your circulation flowing and boost your endorphins. These are chemicals released by the pituitary gland in the brain, responsible for giving us feelings of happiness and well-being.

Affection and comfort

Not all animals like to be cuddled, but luckily for their human owners, many of them do! If you’re dreaming of spending the evening cuddled up on the sofa with a furry friend, you’re not alone.

Many pet owners find immense joy in these smaller moments of love and comfort. While animals have greater physical and emotional needs than just affection, there’s a balance to find. When you get it right, both of you can live in a mutually beneficial way and enjoy peaceful moments of downtime together.

Funny moments

Don’t forget that animals can be simply hilarious doing funny things that don’t need to be understood or overanalysed.

Enjoying the simple things in life can be difficult, especially when you’re juggling a busy routine and working life. But when you arrive back at home to be greeted by your pet, you’ll feel a sense of fulfilment and love.

Our pets are carefree and full of joy, teaching us to cherish the beauty of simple companionship. Whether it’s the endearing quirks of a dog or the playful antics of your cat perched on its scratching post, they remind us to embrace the moment and not take life too seriously.

A sense of responsibility

Animals rely on us to meet their every need. While some animals have higher maintenance demands than others, every pet will require some level of daily effort from their owner.

Whether it’s waking up early to feed them on time or heading out for a long stroll in the country park, cats and dogs have physical and emotional needs that only we can provide when they live in a human household.

Even if you keep a small animal like a guinea pig or a rabbit, you’ll be responsible for cleaning their bedding and making sure they never go without food or water. No matter which animal you keep, looking after them could motivate you to change and upgrade your own daily routine.
