Llanelli’s Radio BGM scoops prestigious award

Contribution to the town’s culture and arts has to led to Llanelli’s Radio BGM scooping a prestigious award.

Radio BGM – a service based out of Prince Philip Hospital – won the award at a Llanelli Town Council 50th anniversary awards evening held at the Diplomat Hotel.

Like the Town Council, Radio BGM is also celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Formed in 1974, Radio BGM has given hundreds of local people of all ages a platform to learn radio presenting and technical skills – and all for the benefit of hospital patients and staff, as well as the wider local community of Llanelli.

A Radio BGM app has also been made available in recent years, meaning people across the world can listen to the 24/7 service.

The current on-air volunteer presenting team includes Steff Griffiths. Wayne Cleaver, Gareth Hurford, Nicola Casling, Greg Jones, Paul Scott, Eldon Phillips, Nicholas Heath, Phil Trotter and Lee Giffard.

Many other volunteers contribute to the Radio BGM off-air operation. They include Gale Morgan-Williams, Alessandro De Filippo, Laura Evans. Karen Squires, Christian Reed, Linda Williams, Ken Rees and Nevil Williams.

Radio BGM chairman David Hurford said: “Llanelli is a town with so much creative and cultural talent, so it’s a privilege to have won this award – and we extend our thanks to Llanelli Town Council for their recognition and support.

“We’re very proud to have been at the heart of the Llanelli community for 50 years but we wouldn’t haven’t been able to achieve anything without the hundreds of volunteers who have given up their time over the years to learn radio skills and benefit others.

“And Radio BGM continues to go from strength to strength, with a number of further improvements currently being made thanks to a Shared Prosperity Fund grant from Carmarthenshire Council through the UK Government.

“We’ll continue to attend as many local events as possible to further raise awareness of the station and to give hundreds more volunteers the chance to contribute to Llanelli’s booming cultural and arts community in future.”
