Local businesses encouraged to attend Transport for Wales supplier event

A Meet the Buyer event for local suppliers will be held at Taff’s Well RFC on 23 October, between 09:00 and 17:00, for some of the key projects in the development of the Metro.

At the drop-in event, suppliers will have the opportunity to meet members of the delivery team, discuss opportunities and complete training with Business Wales.

This is a major opportunity for suppliers to get involved in the £738 million transformation of the South Wales Metro, which has been part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund through Welsh Government.

This will include the new £100 million tram-train depot and control centre in Taff’s Well, and the construction and upgrading of Metro stations. A wide range of opportunities are available, from installing WiFi, CCTV, lifts and fire alarms, to plumbing, piling and building toilet facilities.

TfW and Griffiths are preparing the railway for innovative new rolling stock, a high-frequency ‘turn-up-and-go’ service and better integration between modes of transport, to create a world-class transport network which the people of South Wales can be proud of.

James Price, CEO of Transport for Wales, said:

“I’m delighted that in partnership with Alun Griffiths Ltd, we are offering these significant opportunities for the local business community to get involved in the building of the South Wales Metro.

“At TfW, we’re committed to sustainable and ethical procurement. This includes ensuring that we create opportunities for small- and medium-sized enterprises to play a role in the once-in-a-generation project to transform the public transport network of South Wales.

“I’m confident this will provide a significant boost to the development of the local economy, demonstrating our commitment to sustainable development and the Well-being of Future Generations Act.”

Shaun Thompson, Rail Director for Alun Griffiths Ltd added:

“As a Welsh based civil engineering company, we are proud to be working with TfW and involved in these prestigious projects. Both will deliver significant, local economic benefits and create opportunities for Welsh SMEs and job seekers alike in South Wales.”
