Main road in Swansea set for an upgrade

A main road through a Swansea community is set to be transformed with a new road surface.

Swansea Council is planning to resurface almost a kilometre (900m) of road, identified as in poor condition.

The improvements along Cecil Road, in Gowerton, will be completed as part of the Council’s ongoing planned maintenance for highways in the city.

Highways maintenance teams are currently working to improve Townhill Road with 600m of new road surface being laid.

Both schemes form part of the Council’s multi million pound investment into improving roads which also includes the city-wide PATCH repair programme, as well as the successful 48hr pothole repair scheme.

Andrew Stevens, Cabinet Member for Environment and Infrastructure, said: “Cecil Road has been identified though our regular highway inspections as in need of improvements.

“Our maintenance teams will be moving onto the road in the next few days to complete the works.”

Part of the programme will include removal of the existing traffic calming measures so the resurfacing work can be completed.

The road previously benefited from Safe Routes in Communities funding to help create a safer environment near to local schools.

Cllr Stevens, added: “Once the resurfacing work has been completed along Cecil Road, our traffic management team will carry out regular speed surveys. The results of the surveys will provide information to make a further decision on what traffic calming measures are reinstalled.”

Highways teams are also out and about filling potholes that are plaguing many parts of the country because of cold and wet weather over the winter period.

The first two weeks of January saw maintenance teams fill more than 750 potholes reported to the council by the public.

Cllr Stevens said: “Our quick response to potholes reported is something I’m pleased with. Like many cities and towns across the country, our roads have suffered but we have kept to our promise of repairing potholes within 48hrs. The teams have been extremely busy making sure our roads are safe.”
