Matt Johnson goes the extra 26 miles for Alzheimer’s Society

Matt Johnson and his father Gary completed the Brecon Beacons Trek26 challenge for Alzheimer's Society

Welsh TV presenter Matt Johnson was among hundreds who completed an epic 26-mile trek through the Brecon Beacons for Alzheimer’s Society on Saturday.   Matt, who walked with his dad Gary, is best known for presenting in the interactive “Hub” on ITV’s This Morning and for co-hosting Channel 5’s OK! TV.

With one in three people born in the UK today going on to develop dementia in their lifetime, Matt and Gary strapped on their walking boots and trekked 26 miles to show support for the 982,00 people living with dementia in the UK and the many millions more carers, partners, families, and friends affected.

The route began with a steep climb up Cefn Cyff to reach the peak of Fan Y Big, then turned on to the Beacons Way in the forest above Talybont Reservoir. On reaching the small village of Talybont on Usk, the route joined the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal tow path.

Matt said: “Although my legs are tired, it was completely worth it to trek alongside my dad Gary and the hundreds of other Alzheimer’s Society supporters, raising money to bring help, hope and awareness to everyone living with dementia. My Nanny Emily was in our thoughts throughout the 26 miles.

“As expected, the never-ending epic Welsh views on the route were spectacular and there was such a friendly atmosphere – I thunderously encourage everyone who can to sign up for a Trek26 event! It’s hard but it’s so, so worth it!

“Every penny raised will help Alzheimer’s Society get closer to finding a cure, improve care and help support so many more people affected by dementia. Trek26 is such a great way to show support and I’m feeling pretty proud of myself and my Dad for taking it on and completing the challenge. Thank you for your support and donations so far.”

Emily Lyle, Fundraising Manager at Alzheimer’s Society, said: “We’re so incredibly grateful to Matt and Gary for putting in the hours to train for and complete a Trek26. Their involvement has helped raised money and much-needed awareness of dementia.”

Money raised from Alzheimer’s Society’s Trek26 events will go towards the charity’s vital services, which have been used more than 4.5 million times in the last year. Funds will also go towards providing hope for the future by campaigning to make dementia the priority it should be and funding groundbreaking research.
