Powys residents were helped to claim an extra £3.28 million in benefits, that they were entitled to, during the last financial year (2023/24), thanks to the county council.

Its Money Advice Service helped 1,406 people over that period and would like to help even more residents who are struggling with their finances over the next 12 months.

Powys County Council’s (PCC) Money Advice Service can help you:

    • Find ways to maximise your income and give advice on your entitlements.
    • Apply for benefits and welfare grants.
    • Manage your fuel costs and find better ways to heat your home.
    • Manage your debt situation, including the option of a ‘Breathing Space’.
    • Manage your finances through better budgeting.

The support offered includes specialist help, backed by Macmillan, for Powys residents who have been diagnosed with cancer and for their families and carers.

The Money Advice Service has also been able to take on additional temporary staff to help with queries thanks to a grant from the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund (Levelling Up).

However, despite these successes, it is estimated that as many as:

    • 5,000 Powys households may not be claiming Council Tax Reduction support that they are entitled to.
    • 2,000 Powys pensioners may not be claiming Pension Credit that they are entitled to.
    • 1,750 Powys residents may not be claiming Universal Credit that they are entitled to.

If you need help with your benefits, money advice or Macmillan support, you can also speak to PCC’s Money Advice Service.

It offers free and confidential support, either by phone or personal appointment, at home, your local council office, or in your community.

To access it, visit the PCC website and search ‘money advice’ and then complete the online form: ‘Request Money Advice or Macmillan Support’. Or call 01597 826618, or email [email protected]

“I cannot emphasise how important this service is, and I actively encourage low-income families to access it,” said Cllr David Thomas, PCC’s Cabinet Member for Finance and Corporate Transformation. “On average, those who sought help in the last 12 months are now more than £2,300 better off than they were before. This is a significant boost to their yearly incomes.”

Cllr Matthew Dorrance, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for a Fairer Powys added: “We recognise that many of our residents have been adversely impacted by the cost-of-living crisis and if you are struggling financially, or know someone who is, then please make use of this wonderful service.”
